Supreme Court starts Brexit case

The Supreme Court has started a legal hearing into whether Parliament’s consent is required before official Brexit negotiations can begin.

Its 11 justices will hear a government appeal against last month’s High Court ruling that only Parliament has the authority to trigger Article 50, and it can not solely be down to Government.

The complex hearing, which rests on points of law going back centuries, is being streamed live by the BBC. The case is expected to last four days, with the verdict delivered sometime in January.

Should the Prime Minister lose, a further appeal to the European Court of justice is not expected.
