Vics fans vote to name breakaway club 1874 Northwich
Northwich Victoria fans have voted to call their new breakaway club 1874 Northwich, a reference to the Trickies' status as the oldest football club in Cheshire.
A total of 149 votes were cast last night at an open meeting organised by the Northwich Victoria Supporters' Trust. The ballot was open to both members and non-members of the trust.
Fans were given a choice of four names drawn up by the trust board. On advice, none of the names included Vics or Victoria to avoid any possible legal entanglements with the existing club.
1874 Northwich won with 77 votes, with AFC Northwich second with 42. Northwich 1874 picked up 23 votes and Northwich Greens had just five votes. There were also two spoiled ballots.
On its website, the trust said: "It was just such a pleasure to see so many Vics fans talking in a positive way about our future and what we might be able to achieve.
"So, two weeks ago the new club was born. Tonight it has been christened."
