Manchester United are “confident” they will bag the signature of Antoine Griezmann, after reaching a verbal agreement with the players agents.
However, any move is likely to be in next summer’s transfer window, according to reports in Spanish media.
The free scoring player who is comfortable both as an out-and-striker and an attacking midfielder began his career at Real Sociedad, making his debut in 2009 and winning Segunda División in his first season. Across five seasons there, he scored 52 goals in 201 official matches.
In 2014, he was signed by Atlético Madrid for €30 million. The transfer fee to United is expected to be around £55 million.
The French youth international made his debut for the senior national team in 2014 and played at that year’s World Cup, helping France to the quarter-finals. Griezmann was the top scorer and Player of the Tournament at UEFA Euro 2016, where the French were runners-up on home soil.
In 2016 he was shortlisted for the Ballon d’Or 2016 award in which came third place.
It is understood the 25-year-old is the right age and fits the profile United are looking for and, if a deal can be done, they will look to make the France international the next big name to make the move to Old Trafford.
Griezmann says he wants to play club football with his France team-mate Paul Pogba, but only when the time is right.
United signed Pogba for a world record fee of almost £90m last summer, as well as spending £30m on defender Eric Bailly and £26.3m on Henrikh Mkhitaryan.
