Bluebird ceremony marks 50 years

Gina Campbell, the daughter of speed record breaker Donald Campbell, will lay flowers later today at the spot where he was killed on Coniston Water in the Lake District.

Campbell died on 4 January 1967, while trying to break his own water speed record in Bluebird.

Commemorative events, including a fly past by an RAF jet, are taking place in the village over the next few days.

The 45-year-old was killed instantly as the boat hit the water and disintegrated.

His remains and boat wreckage were not recovered until 2001.
